An important step in every NJ rhinoplasty is the preoperative consultation. Preoperative consultations give the patient and the surgeon a chance to get to know each other and discuss the rhinoplasty in advance.

As the patient, you will learn about the procedure as well as all the steps you can take to improve your chances of a positive outcome. For the NJ rhinoplasty surgeon, the consultation is important because it allows him or her to learn about your goals so that treatment can be tailored specifically to your case.

You will get an idea of what will be discussed during your NJ rhinoplasty consultation with Dr. Winters, including procedure overview, discussion of complications, where the surgery will occur and more. You can use the information in this guide to familiarize yourself with the process and to prepare questions.

Check-in

The first thing you will do upon arriving at your NJ rhinoplasty consultation is to check in with the receptionist. Once Dr. Winters is notified of your arrival, the receptionist will call you back to meet with him as soon as possible.

Procedure Overview

Once you and Dr. Winters become acquainted, you will begin discussing your goals for treatment. You will go over your medical history, your current overall health and any other information that Dr. Winters may find helpful.

When Dr. Winters has a good understanding of how to meet your goals, he will explain his plan to you in detail. He will draw out the procedure on a diagram and take you through it step by step so that you are fully informed as to how you will be treated.

An important part of NJ rhinoplasty, which Dr. Winters will bring up, is that each step affects the next step. In other words, the changes made to the nose in one step will affect and perhaps limit the possibilities for changes in the next step. For example, if in one step your surgeon removes a bump from your nose, this will reduce the length of the nose and cause its tip to be higher.

While NJ rhinoplasty can vary depending on the patient, the operation generally follows a similar set of steps. Once you are safely under anesthesia, for an open rhinoplasty, Dr. Winters will begin the operation by making a small incision across the columella, which is the small piece of tissue that separates the nostrils. Making an incision here provides Dr. Winters full visual and access to the bone and cartilage that compose the structure of the nose. These parts can be accessed during a closed rhinoplasty, but Dr. Winters won’t have the same level of visual clarity as he will with an open procedure.

Once Dr. Winters has made the columella incision, he will begin reshaping the nose according to the plan. Once this is complete, he will close the incision and the operation will be finished. The length of an NJ rhinoplasty can range from as brief as 20 minutes to as long as a few hours, depending on the case. Dr. Winters will be able to provide a more accurate estimate of the length of your rhinoplasty.

Discussion of Complications

Once you and Dr. Winters have discussed the procedure, you will move on to the potential complications. It’s important to discuss complications during your NJ rhinoplasty consultation so that you can be aware of the risks of the operation and make an informed decision.

Like all surgery, rhinoplasty comes with a risk of infection, bleeding, swelling, scarring, and pain. Other potential complications include difficulty breathing through the nose and an uneven appearance to the nose. You shouldn’t expect complications like these, but, as Dr. Winters will tell you, it’s a good idea to acknowledge the risk before moving forward with treatment.

Discussion of the Vanguard Surgical Center

An important part of your NJ rhinoplasty is the location where the operation will take place. Dr. Winters will talk with you about the Vanguard Surgical Center, a state-of-the-art facility with all of the amenities to make sure that your operation goes quickly and comfortably.

Question and Answer Session

Once you and Dr. Winters have discussed the procedure, the potential complications and the surgical facility, you will have time to ask any questions that have come to mind. During this time, don’t hesitate to ask as many questions as you like. You might want to ask Dr. Winters about his experience conducting rhinoplasties, for example.

Here are other questions you might find helpful:

  • How long will recovery take?
  • What can I do to facilitate a positive outcome?
  • Can I contact some of your previous patients?
  • Can I see before and after pictures?

It’s important to resolve your doubts and concerns before the procedure, so ask whatever questions come to mind during your NJ rhinoplasty consultation. Dr. Winters will be happy to answer them for you.
